Description: The course is going to be a brief introduction to Urban Beekeeping. We will cover basic bee biology, hive management, the beekeeping calendar, honey production and an introduction to integrated pest management. Participants should leave with a better idea whether the exciting world of the honeybee is something for them. We will be doing a hive inspection and participants can sample some honey right out of the hive. A veil will be provided.
Instructor: Christian Duhme has been a beekeeper for 5 years. He is the beekeeper for the City of Vancouver and keeps bees on the roof of City Hall and on Southlands Organic Farm. Christian is a certified Beemaster and the Head of Biology at St. George’s School. In 2007 his teaching style and enthusiasm was recognized with the National Teaching Excellence Award by BIOTECanada. Christian has a passion for anything bees and when he is not ‘knee-deep’ submersed in a beehive he enjoys to spend his free time with his two little children Markus (2 years) and Emily (3 months).
